Thunderstorms Could Threaten Croatan Fire Lines

Officials from the U.S Forest Service said thunderstorms expected in the area could threaten the fire lines put up around the Croatan wildfire.

Nearly 22,000 acres of the forest are burned after a prescribed fire got out of control last week. The forest service said 70% of the fire is currently contained, but thunderstorms in the forecast could threaten containment.

"It's the potential for embers to cross the line and to start potential for fire to cross the line," ranger Derek Ibarguen, said.

Fire crews are monitoring the area. Ibarguen said they are confident the fire will not get any larger at this point, but are prepared for the possibility.

"We have engine crews out there patrolling and watching for spot fires across the line.”
