RICHLANDS -

A Richlands woman is recovering after a wreck in which a trailer detached from a pick-up truck and slammed into an oncoming car, according to the investigating trooper.

Linda Whitehurst, 35, was driving a Toyota Corolla south on Cypress Creek Road about 7 a.m. Friday morning, troopers said.

Michael Miller was driving the opposite direction in a Dodge Ram; he was pulling a steel trailer, troopers said.  The trailer detached from the truck, crossed the center line, and slammed into Whitehurst's car, troopers said.

Investigators say the truck did not have safety chains attached to the trailer.  Miller has been charged with failure to secure a trailer.

Whitehurst was airlifted to a hospital, where family says she's in surgery.  She should make a full recovery, and the family would like to thank all emergency officials who responded.

"I'm sorry for everything that's happened," said Miller.  "I didn't mean it."

Family members said they are not upset with Miller because they believe this was just an accident.  "I went over there to try to help," said Miller, "and there was a guy who told me to just stand out of the way."
