PILOT MOUNTAIN, N.C. -

Authorities say a wildfire at Pilot Mountain State Park could spread to 1,000 acres.

Surry County Emergency Management Director John Shelton says the blaze covered nearly 700 acres of the Surry County park by Saturday morning and could grow before it's completely contained. No injuries have been reported.

Shelton says about 60 firefighters are working to control the blaze.

The blaze started as a prescribed burn. The fire was supposed to get rid of dead leaves and undergrowth within a controlled 180 acres. But flames jumped the fire line about 3:30 p.m. Thursday. State officials then closed the park.

State Parks and Recreation spokesman Charlie Peek says flames spread to a dead standing tree and sent embers flying. He says officials had checked wind conditions with the National Weather Service.
