PRINCEVILLE, EDGECOMBE COUNTY -

A day care owner and her grandchildren escaped a fire early Friday morning that destroyed the business.

The fire happened at the "Angels of Faith" day care, located on King Ave. in Princeville.

The business was attached to the home of the day care's owner, Vera Staton. She told NewsChannel 12 that she was awoken by the fire alarm after 5:30 a.m. Friday.

Staton said her two young grandsons, ages 5 and 9, were also in the house when the fire started. They were all able to escape unharmed.

Five fire stations responded to the fire, including the Princeville Volunteer Fire Department. Investigators said the daycare was a total loss.

Princeville Volunteer Fire Chief Fred Crowell said the cause of the fire was undetermined. Crews were scheduled to return to the scene to figure out what sparked the blaze.

Staton and her family are staying at her daughter’s house in Tarboro. She said it was not the first time her family has been out of a home- Hurricane Floyd destroyed their house fourteen years ago.

"[I feel] just as misplaced as we did in Hurricane Floyd. And I thought I would never have to go through this again," Staton said. " But you never know what life serves you, so gotta take it one day at a time."

Staton said she is looking for a new place to run her day care.
