PITT COUNTY -

A Pitt County assistant principal accused of assaulting a student has been found not guilty.

Greg MacDaid, 44, pleaded not guilty to simple assault and was acquitted on Jan. 10, officials said. MacDaid's suspension was lifted and he returned to work Monday as the assistant principal at South Central High School, said district spokesperson Brock Letchworth.

MacDaid was originally accused of assaulting a 15-year-old student on Nov. 13. He turned himself in on Nov. 21 and was suspended with pay during the investigation.

Investigators have released warrants detailing an alleged assault by a Pitt County Schools assistant principal against a student.

According to the warrants, 44-year-old Greg MacDaid, an assistant principal at South Central High School, grabbed a 15-year-old student from behind and pushed the teen against a glass wall in a hallway on Nov. 13. MacDaid then allegedly shoved his elbow into the teen's neck, holding the student against the wall.

MacDaid turned himself in to Greenville Police on Nov. 21 and has been charged with simple assault, according to district spokesperson Brock Letchworth. MacDaid has been suspended with pay.

Pitt County Schools released the following statement:

“Mr. MacDaid has been an admirable employee of the district for some time, and we were saddened to hear of these charges.

"District officials have been investigating this matter since it first came to our attention last month. Keep in mind that federal law limits what can be said about specific personnel and student matters, especially those that are related to a criminal investigation.

"Pitt County Schools and the Board of Education take allegations of assault very seriously, and the district has gathered statements and other evidence related to this allegation from students and staff. We will continue to cooperate with all parties involved until this is resolved.”

MacDaid is due back in court on Jan. 10, according to officials.

The suspect has been with the school district since August 1991, and has no prior disciplinary issues on file, said Letchworth.

MacDaid was a teacher at Wahl-Coates from 1991 to 1999, an assistant principal at Grifton from 1999 to 2002, an assistant principal at G.R. Whitfield from 2002 to 2004, an assistant principal at Pactolus from 2004 to 2010, and has served as the assistant Principal at South Central since 2010.
