Bertha downgrades to tropical storm

Bertha weakens to tropical storm

Tropical Storm Bertha continues to spin out in the Atlantic. However, Bertha is being torn apart by high wind shear thanks to a stalled-out frontal boundary off the coast of North Carolina.

As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, Bertha had winds near 63 mph and was racing off to the northeast at 22 mph.

Bertha was located at 33.4N, 72.9W.

Bertha is NOT expected to head to North Carolina and will continue to weaken as the day goes on.

Storm impacts could however be felt along our coastal sections. We expect to see high surf of 3 to 5 feet building to 6 to 8 feet. Strong rip currents will also be likely as well.

The rain that has caused so much flooding across Eastern Carolina in the past four days is not associated with Tropical Storm Bertha. Bertha will continue to move off toward the northeast and will not bring any rain or winds to North Carolina.
