RALEIGH -

Legislation to protect health care workers sponsored by a North Carolina lawmaker who died last weekend has been signed into law.

Gov. Pat McCrory signed the bill sponsored by the late Rep. Jim Fulghum on Tuesday.

The measure requires the state to develop regulations to protect people who work with or near hazardous materials from disease and injury caused by exposure.

Fulghum was a retired brain surgeon from Raleigh and a first-term lawmaker. He died at age 70 after a recent cancer diagnosis. His memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday.

McCrory said the bill furthers Fulghum's legacy of caring for the safety of others and that the legislation will provide needed protections for health care workers.

The governor's office plans to deliver a pen used to sign the legislation to Rep. Fulghum's widow, Mary Susan Fulghum.
