Bridge work was scheduled to start Tuesday on Short Bridge Road in Pitt County.
The bridge, located south of Falkand, will be replaced. In addition to a new bridge, the project also calls for improvements to the roadway on both sides of the bridge.
The project is expected to be completed by April 8, 2014.
During the closure, drivers should use Kings Crossroad Road and N.C. 43.
The existing bridge, which was built in 1948, is deemed structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. This means the bridge is safe, but it needs to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands.
