CRAVEN COUNTY -

A burned-out house that is known as a neighborhood eyesore could become a permanent fixture.

The mobile home on Pate Road, between New Bern and Vanceboro in Craven County, burned in late April.

Investigators determined that someone set the fire.

In some cities, municipal ordinances regulate property standards and this house would likely be subject to demolition if the property owner did not clear the site in a timely manner.

But there’s not a public nuisance law pertaining to “out in the county” homes like this one.

One neighbor is considering taking action herself.

“It's going to motivate me to come over here and start moving [the debris] out, however I can,” said Debbie Thompson.

But Thompson knows that would be illegal, so she is instead forced to look at the charred building.

The property owner is Sonja Garrard, record shows.

NewsChannel 12 went to two addresses associated with Garrard, but couldn’t locate her; one of the addresses is an empty field.
