PITT COUNTY -

Deputies said they are searching for whoever cut through the wall of a Pitt County convenience store and broke into the ATM inside.

According to investigators, the burglar jumped the fence of a Country Fare store, on Barrus Construction Road, northwest of Greeenville, after the business closed at about 8:30 p.m. Monday. The burglar then cut through the metal back wall of the store and broke into the ATM, deputies told NewsChannel 12.

Investigators did not say how much money was stolen from the ATM, but did say the machine itself was not taken.

The break-in was discovered Tuesday morning, deputies said. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Pitt County Sheriff's Office at 252-902-2800.

This incident is the latest in a string of break-ins involving holes through walls in Pitt County.

On June 19, a postmaster discovered a 3-foot hole at the back wall of the post office in Stokes. According to deputies, the safe inside the building was severely damaged.

In April, burglars smashed a hole through the wall of Express Food Mart in the Grimesland area, investigators said. Two safes were stolen.

In late March, thieves knocked two holes through a wall of Belvoir Corner Stop, off N.C. 33 West. Deputies said the burglars stole a safe filled with $40,000 in cash, checkbooks and credit cards.

At last check, no arrests have been made in those break-ins. Investigators said they do not know if those previous cases are connected to the latest incident at the Country Fare store.
