CHOCOWINITY, BEAUFORT COUNTY -

Beaufort County Deputies arrested two people in connection with a meth lab bust where five children were found.

Beaufort County Sheriff Alan Jordan says deputies responded to a suspected meth lab at 415 Carrow Road in Chocowinity Friday night. Investigators say they had information that 38-year-old Donnie Mayo was cooking meth in the home.

Mayo is currently on probation and subject to warrant-less searches of his home. When investigators tried to search his home, they say Mayo and his girlfriend, Gina Whaley, initially refused to cooperate with the search.

Investigators say the pair later admitted to using Gatorade bottles to cook meth in the home. Deputies say Mayo said he had hidden the bottles in the kitchen's oven and in his bedroom.

Investigators found five children in the home. They were decontaminated at the scene and taken to Vidant Beaufort Hospital.

Mayo and Whaley were arrested and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, possessing/distributing meth precursors, maintaining a dwelling to manufacture a controlled substance, and possessing of methamphetamine. They were in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond.

Investigators say they will also pursue child endangerment charges against Mayo and Whaley.

Deputies said Saturday that the children are safe and staying with different family members.
