ORIENTAL, PAMLICO COUNTY -

A man leading police on a high-speed chase targeted pedestrians in Oriental Saturday night, according to authorities.

A Pamlico County deputy pulled over Desmond Bryant, 31, on Highway 55 in the Stonewall area for a suspected DWI at approximately 10:15 p.m. Saturday, according to authorities.

As the deputy waited for backup, Bryant pulled back onto the road and drove east, authorities said.

Bryant sped through Oriental, turned around, and backtracked west on Highway 55, authorities said.

Bryant later approached 100 mph in a Ford Explorer on Straight Road, driving a loop before returning to Highway 55, authorities said.

The chase then went back into Oriental; investigators said Bryant aimed his vehicle toward pedestrians on North Street.

Bryant ran into a deputy's patrol car, and was later subdued and arrested at approximately 10:45 p.m.

The chase ended in the area of Midyette Street.

Rescuers took the suspect to a hospital because a trooper suspected that Bryant ingested drugs during the chase.

The deputy was not seriously hurt; Bryant was released from the hospital, and is now out of jail.

Bryant's charges include felony flee to elude, felony assault with a deadly weapon, DWI, reckless driving, and driving on a suspended license.
