One person is dead after an early morning accident where an SUV hit a pedestrian, according to the Highway Patrol.
Troopers said it happened at 5:00 Saturday morning. 40-year-old Ivan Drew, New Bern, was walking in the middle of the street when he was hit by a Ford Ranger. Drew was reportedly wearing dark clothing and no reflective gear.
It happened where highway 17 South merges onto Highway 70 East.
Troopers said the driver of the vehicle was not speeding and won't be charged.
"I just want to say to the family that I'm sorry," said the driver, who wanted to remain anonymous. "I was on my way to work like a normal day, and I just didn't see him."
NewsChannel12 has decided release the victim's name because the family have already been told of his death.
His brother, James Drew, describes him as a man always on the go.
"My brother was a roamer," James said. "He never stood still. He roamed at night, at day. He really never stayed still."
The driver is thinking of the Drew family during this difficult time.
"I know I'm not charged, but still, I feel like I'm going to be charged for life for this," he said. "I'm definitely, definitely sorry."
