Duke Energy is alerting its customers to an ongoing bill payment scam that's affecting people in Eastern North Carolina.
According to the press release, several customers have received deceptive telephone calls about their electric service. The release states that victims were contacted by a person claiming to represent Duke Energy. This person told victims they must pay their bill over the phone with a prepaid debit card to avoid an interruption in service. In some instances, victims were told the service interruption would take place in less than an hour if the bill wasn't paid immediately.
Duke Energy says they will never threaten to disconnect their users' service within an hour of notification of an overdue payment. They also say that, in the event of an unpaid bill, customers will be notified over a period of several weeks.
