JOSE LOPEZ
DURHAM, N.C. -

Authorities in Durham are looking into multiple allegations regarding the city's police chief as he faces a discrimination complaint filed by the assistant chief.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that city officials are investigating claims that Chief Jose L. Lopez said an attorney wounded in a shooting "deserved" being shot. They are also looking into allegations that the police department gave preferential treatment to a Lopez relative who applied for a job on the force.

Lopez is also the subject of a civil rights discrimination complaint filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission by Assistant Chief Winslow Forbes.

Durham's city manager says officials have found no evidence of discrimination, and that the hiring of the relative wasn't in violation of city policy.
