William Barker
WILMINGTON, NEW HANOVER COUNTY -

A sentence has been handed down to a former Kinston councilman who admitted to having child pornography.

A Wilmington judge ordered 44-year-old William Walter Barker to serve six-and-a-half years in prison, U.S. Attorney Thomas G. Walker announced Thursday. In addition, Barker must serve a lifetime of supervised release and pay a fine of $10,000.

Barker had pleaded guilty in late April to one count of receipt of child pornography, said Walker. Barker was originally charged with 10 counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

Police said they found Barker's USB drive, containing images of young boys between 7 and 14 years old, in the Fremont Town Hall in Wayne County, where Barker was attending a meeting.

On Nov. 29, 2012, police searched Barker's Kinston home, where they found a laptop that had 11,025 images and 1,022 videos of child pornography, investigators said.

According to a police report, Barker tired to kill himself before he was arrested, and an officer had to wrestle the gun away from his hands.
