Riders on the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry run will likely notice that their trip is going to be a little longer, but not for very long.
The N.C. Department of Transportation's Ferry Division says the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry route is temporarily switching to the alternate route across Hatteras Inlet while the U.S. Coast Guard places buoys in the state navigation channel.
The operation began Tuesday and continues through Thursday.
Because the alternate route is about 13 minutes longer than the traditional route, the ferry is working on a temporary schedule change that accounts for the additional time.
The route will return to its normal schedule from both terminals once the Coast Guard operation is complete.
