A sign of the approaching summer is the new ferry schedule for the Ocracoke-Hatteras run.

The N.C. Department of Transportation says its ferry division will run 30 trips each way between the islands beginning Tuesday and every day through Oct. 7.

There will be four daily hour-long trips out of Hatteras between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m., then every half-hour between 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The schedule then switches to 7:30, 8, 9, 11 and midnight.

Ocracoke departures are at 4:30 a.m., 6:30 a.m., 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., then every half-hour from 9:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. After that, runs come at 9 p.m., 9:30 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.

Cedar Island and Swan Quarter runs to and from Ocracoke start their summer schedule on May 21.
