NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY -

Sixteen teams gathered at union point park to test their skill and speed in the annual dragon boat races. The event is geared towards raising money for the Coastal Carolina River Watch organization and gathered donations for the Wounded Warriors Project.

About 140 Marines from Cherry Point participated in the race. President of the Coastal Carolina River Watch Rick Dove says not one of them paid an entry fee. Each one was sponsored by a member or business from the community.

The event not only raises funds, it is geared towards raising awareness in the community on the importance of clean rivers.  Members of the Water Keeper Alliance are using the Dragon Boat races to promote "Swimmable Water Weekend",  a time to look at local waters and promote .
