CHARLOTTE -

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is making it easier for travelers to see how to reach the terminal and give them better access to the Internet once they've arrived.

The Charlotte Observer reports that the City Council on Monday approved spending $400,000 on upgrades.

Airport officials said they are upgrading the airport's free wireless network speed from 100 MB to 1,000 MB by year's end. The airport said demand for bandwidth from the multiplying number of wireless devices had increased since 2006, when Charlotte Douglas first started offering free wireless Internet.

The council also voted to install $211,000 worth of energy-efficient LED lighting along the airport's new entrance road, scheduled for completion in the fall of 2014. The $18.2-million road connects Wilkinson Boulevard and Josh Birmingham Parkway to the terminal.
