A Kinston farmer convicted of defrauding the USDA will go to federal prison.

William L. Whaley, Jr., 50, pleaded guilty in April to making false statements in connection with a commodity credit corporation loan.

U. S. Attorney Thomas G. Walker says Whaley's $272,986.56 loan used soybeans as collateral.  Walker's office says an investigator found that Whaley's bin was empty and the collateral never existed.

Whaley was sentenced to 12 months and 1 day of imprisonment, followed by 3 years of supervised release.
