CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. -

The mother of a woman who died when the HMS Bounty sank off the North Carolina coast has filed a lawsuit against the owner of the vessel.

The suit, filed Monday in federal court on Long Island, names Robert Hansen as a defendant, along with the HMS Bounty Organization.

The HMS Bounty, a replica of an 18-century ship, sank early on Oct. 29 during Superstorm Sandy, about 90 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. Fourteen of the sixteen crew members were rescued, but 42-year-old Claudene Christian died. The captain was never found.

In the suit, Christian's mother accuses Hansen of negligence in allowing the ship to sail. She says it wasn't seaworthy and that the captain shouldn't have taken it out to sea.

Hansen's attorney did not return a call seeking comment.
