AYDEN, PITT COUNTY -

Once a year a 400 pound llama ditches it's pen and roams the halls of Ayden Court Nursing home in Pitt County, as part of National Nursing Home week.

The llama, who's name is Hummer, has visited the center several times. He is fully potty trained and, owners say, he has never spit.

"He does all sorts of functions, schools, churches, and this every year" says Oak Grove Petting Zoo" says Co-owner of Oak Grove Stables, Martha Paschall.

Hummer didn't come alone, 20 pets were stationed outside in the petting zoo. Seniors were able to pet, feed, and hold everything from bunnies to goats and donkeys. Hummer was the only animal to travel inside.

Organizers say they like bringing Hummer inside the center to visit residents that can't make it out to see the animals themselves.

"Many of them grew up on farms and had animals like this, and it is just so great to see their faces light up when they see the animals again." says Ayden Court Administrator, Julie Daugherty.

Daugherty says they have special events planned each day to help celebrate National Nursing Home week. She says for many seniors the indoor llama and petting zoo is their favorite event of the year
