Local Vol. Fire Dept. could help home owners insurance costs

For the last three days the Haws Run Volunteer Fire Department was graded by the North Carolina State Fire Marshal to see how well they fight fire.

This could mean a lower insurance premium for home owners within five miles of the fire station.

The department was graded on how quickly they're able to set up, fill and empty water from fire trucks.

The water was taken from a pond, fire hydrant and a mobile dump tank.

They were also graded on deploying fire hoses, and simulating fire attack.

Based off the department’s new grade home owners in this district could see up to $7000,000 savings in home insurance premiums.

"The lower the grade the actual better the insurance premiums are that you pay on your fire protection coverage from the insurance companies," said Onslow Co Fire Marshal Brian Kelly.

The new rate would be available to insurance carriers in eight months.
