VANCEBORO, CRAVEN COUNTY -

A Craven County man is facing federal charges for allegedly making child pornography. Investigators said the suspect brought the video to a business to convert it to a DVD, and that was how he was caught.

According to documents, a federal grand jury indicted William Christopher Butler, of Vanceboro, on charges including production of child pornography and possession of child pornography. Prosecutors said Butler created the pornography over a 10-year span, which ended in 2012.

The child pornography was in 8mm tape format, and on March 4, Butler brought the video to InMotion in Greenville to convert it to a DVD, a search warrant stated. But a store worker reviewed the tape, and saw video of a teenage girl engaged in sexual acts, according to the warrant.

Other clips on the tape allegedly show young girls, between 4 and 8 years old, at the beach. The children did not appear to know they were being recorded, the warrant added.

The tape also included footage that appeared to have been recorded through blinds, and showed a female changing clothes, investigators said.

NewsChannel 12 talked with the suspect himself, who said he didn't even know a warrant was issued for his arrest. According to Butler, he thought the 8mm tape had video of his mother's funeral from 10 years ago. He said he had no idea the tape included child pornography.

Butler said he reacquired the tape from his ex-wife during their separation, and did not have the ability to view the tape before taking it in for processing.

Butler said although the allegations are untrue, they are already affecting his life.

"This is just something that I hate to be in. I just walked away from a brand new job [at a restaurant]. I don't know what to tell you," Butler said.

At last check, Butler had not yet been arrested. Authorities began their investigation began early this year.

According to records, Butler has no prior criminal record in North Carolina.
