A Cherry Point Marine damaged a Craven County shooting range in an attempt to break into the business, investigators said.

CRAVEN COUNTY -

A Cherry Point Marine has been charged for an attempted break-in at a Craven County shooting range, deputies said.

According to Capt. Mark Weaver of the Craven County Sheriff's Office, Jimmy Smith has been charged with felony breaking and entering with intent to commit a larceny and misdemeanor damage to property.

Jimmy Smith broke three windows and shot a lock at Sureshot Gunsports Wednesday night, said Capt. Joe Heckman of the Craven County Sheriff's Office. The shooting range is on Adams Creek Road near Havelock.

Heckman said the building had an alarm, and a neighbor arrived at the scene within 10 minutes. Smith was not able to steal anything, so he ran into the woods, got into his car, and led authorities on a short chase before crashing his vehicle, said Heckman.

Smith was treated and released from Vidant Medical Center in Greenville before he was charged.

Rusty Bryan, the owner of the business, said Smith had target-practiced at the gun range before. Bryan said his neighbor described the suspect as being impaired.

"Well, I think either he was probably drunk or on drugs, just from the actions described from the neighbor," said Bryan.

Bryan also said the break-in could have been a lot worse.

"There was no indication that he got away with anything," said Bryan. "The only thing he did was break three windows and make a big mess."
