CAMP LEJUENE, ONSLOW COUNTY -

Seven Marines and one sailor were awarded Purple Hearts in a ceremony at Camp Lejeune Wednesday.

They received the medals for injuries suffered during their recent deployment to Afghanistan.

The service members who received the Purple Hearts include Sgt. Kyle M. Edwards, Sgt. Chad C. Skaggs, Cpl. Ian T. Gorman, Cpl. Eric W. Stump, LCpl. Austin J. Dishman, LCpl. Alexander C. Edwards, PFC. Kristoffer D. Paro, and Hospitalman Jacob M. Schaluder.

“When people ask me about my Purple Heart, it’s not about me getting hit. It’s more of a reminder of the people who weren’t so lucky as me, who didn’t make it," said Cpl. Gorman.

The service members are with the 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division.
