SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C -

An upgrade of the radar tracking system at a North Carolina Air Force base is passing a milestone.

Officials at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base on Tuesday officially open the first phase of the 10-year project to replace decades-old facilities.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony opens a new Radar Approach Control facility, where observers track the movements of military and civilian aircraft in airspace surrounding the Goldsboro base. Still to be completed are an air traffic control tower, where airmen direct landings and takeoffs from the base airfields.

The upgrades also include a complex that will house members of the radar approach control units.
