A North Carolina sheriff has fired one of his deputies who allegedly tased a utilities worker during an argument.
New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon announced Friday that he has terminated Deputy Reed Roberts.
According to the Sheriff's Office, Roberts was at his Pender County home Thursday, waiting for the utilities technician to restore his power. But soon after the utilities worker arrived and began repairs, an altercation ensued between that worker and Roberts, said investigators. Roberts then allegedly discharged his Taser at the technician.
An internal investigation determined that Roberts violated the policy of the Sheriff’s Office, authorities said.
“I continue to hold my deputies to a higher standard, and I will not tolerate this type of behavior," said Sheriff McMahon in a statement.
Roberts began working at the New Hanover Sheriff's Office on Jan. 24, 2012 before he was fired Friday. He was assigned to the Patrol Division.
