N.C. ferries shifting to off-season schedules

Vacations are over and the children have gone back to school. All that means the N.C. Ferry Division is returning to its off-season schedule on four of its popular routes.
Beginning Tuesday, the Cedar Island-Ocracoke route goes from six daily departures to four, and the Swan Quarter-Ocracoke route drops from four departures to two. The Southport-Fort Fisher route eliminates two of its 16 daily trips.
On Oct. 8, the ferry run between Hatteras and Ocracoke islands switches to its regular off-season hourly departures from both terminals between 5 a.m. and midnight, with additional departures added if needed.
The commuter routes across the Pamlico and Neuse rivers are unaffected by seasonal changes, and the Currituck-Knotts Island route, which accommodates school students, switched to an increased school year schedule in August.
