RALEIGH, WAKE COUNTY -

Health authorities say North Carolina has its first reported case of a tropical disease that could be transmitted by a type of mosquito commonly found in the state.

The state Department of Health and Human Services said Thursday that the Chikungunya (chik-en-GUN-ye) virus is transmitted by mosquitoes.

Officials say a state resident who recently travelled to the Caribbean has come down with the disease.  There have not been any cases of the disease known to have been acquired in North Carolina or the continental United States.

Symptoms usually begin three to seven days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. They include the sudden onset of fever and severe, often-disabling joint pains in the hands and feet that can last for months.
