RALEIGH, WAKE COUNTY -

More than 100 state House members have signed a letter opposing any attempt by a federally recognized tribe from outside North Carolina to build a casino with land inside the state.

The letter circulating Tuesday in the House is signed by Speaker Thom Tillis and leaders from both parties. It seeks to counter talk of a potential casino by the Catawba Indian Nation. A Cleveland County leader says local officials met with an adviser to Gov. Pat McCrory in July to talk about the idea. The McCrory administration later downplayed the idea.

The letter to U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell said legislators would have "serious opposition" if her agency attempted to make North Carolina lands eligible for gambling.

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians has a western North Carolina casino.
