New Bern City Manager Mike Epperson will leave his post effective December 30, 2013. Epperson made the announcement at Tuesday night's board of aldermen meeting.
Epperson took the city manager's job in 2010 and quickly began reorganizing city management positions. The city's general fund grew from seven percent to 25 percent.
But a significant pay increase offer for Epperson in February of this year caused a deep divide among city aldermen. Epperson wound up turning down a $30,000, three-year increase to his $150,000 salary.
Mike Epperson will stay in New Bern. The law firm of Ward and Smith announced Tuesday night that Epperson will become the firm's new executive director and chief operating officer.
His resignation at New Bern City Hall insures that he will serve as city manager for a period of only about three weeks under new Mayor Dana Outlaw. Outlaw will take the oath of office in early December.
