NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY -

New Bern Mayoral Candidates Sabrina Bengel and Dana Outlaw squared off in their final debate Tuesday night at Craven Community College.

They exchanged remarks on several important issues.  Bengel stressed the need for job creation and neighborhood alliances. The present Ward 1 alderman said producing job opportunities would help local students stay in the area after their education.

Outlaw called for New Bern and Craven County to combine some services, like parks and recreation.  The present Ward 6 alderman said eliminating duplication of services would help reduce tax rates in the city.

Both candidates offered ideas on how to reduce the city's utility costs.

The runoff election on Tuesday, Nov. 5 will determine the successor to current New Bern Mayor Lee Bettis.

Coincidentally, the First and Sixth Wards will elect successors to Bengel and Outlaw in the election.  Alfred Barfield and Dallas Blackiston square off for Ward 1 alderman. New Bern natives Jeffrey Odham and Ashley Smith are the opponents in Ward 6.
