NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY -

After a 90-minute mayoral debate Monday in downtown New Bern, one of the candidates questioned her opponent's ability to lead.

"I do not see where he has stepped up," Sabrina Bengel said of Dana Outlaw.

"Check out my resume, there's proven leadership on my part for many years," Outlaw said.

Regarding Bengel's comment, Outlaw said, "that's Mrs. Bengel at her worst."

The pair debated in the Isaac Taylor Garden, 228 Craven St.

It was the first of three planned debates.

During the forum, Bengel suggested locating a Craven Community College satellite campus in the Five Points Community.

Outlaw laid out his jobs philosophy, which is focused on service jobs connected to the military.

The two are set to debate Wednesday at The Flame Catering Centre, 2301 Neuse Blvd. at 6:00 p.m.

Election Day is November 5.
