New development coming to New Bern
Almost 25 acres of land along the Neuse River, that has been vacant for almost ten years, may soon see some changes.
A Florida-based company called New Bern Investments LLC plans to give the riverfront development on North Craven Street a major make-over.
Company leaders said they plan to make it either a commercial, retail or residential area. The company is giving people until the end of this month to voice any concerns about the plans.
The site has been home to many things like a sawmill, a fertilizer company and a wood treatment facility.
Now neighbors like Eric Lane said they're ready for a change.
"Actually I’m really excited something is coming to New Bern and new construction. I like to see a little more developed than a brownfield, while the water view is nice I’ll still have enough height to see over the new construction,"
In February many residents who live on the street got a letter in the mail informing homeowners and business owners that a development would happen.
Company documents state they plan to make the land either a commercial, retail or residential area. It also said the brownfield's soil and groundwater is contaminated with arsenic due to the former wood treatment plant, things the company said they plan to fix.
"I think there's a lot of potential, and I think they'll be able to clean it up and we'll have some decent property. Hopefully it will increase home prices and values," Lane said.
There is no set date yet on when construction will begin.
