BOILING SPRINGS LAKES, N.C. -

A Southport police officer who was present when a teenager was shot and killed has been placed on paid administrative leave, but officials are saying little else about the shooting.

The incident started Sunday afternoon when 18-year-old Keith Vidal's family called police and said he picked up a screwdriver and threatened his mother at their home in Boiling Springs Lakes.

Mark Wilsey Sr. says that initially officers calmed his son, who suffers from schizophrenia. But Wilsey says when a third officer arrived, his son became agitated. Wilsey says officers used a stun gun on Vidal and then a shot was fired and Vidal was hit.

Southport Police Chief Jerry Dove says officer Byron Vassey was put on leave. Dove would not say if investigators think Vassey pulled the trigger.
