Jonathan Dixon
SALISBURY, ROWAN COUNTY -

Authorities said they have found the inmate who escaped a North Carolina prison.

According to ABC-affiliate WSOC, 27-year-old Jonathan Dixon was captured Tuesday morning on Auction Drive near Salisbury in Rowan County. A spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety said Dixon was found inside a building.

The Department of Public Safety stated that Dixon disappeared from Piedmont Correctional Institution south of Salisbury sometime after 11 p.m. Sunday. Staff discovered that Dixon was missing from the prison's minimum-security unit at about 4 a.m. Monday, said officials.

Dixon is serving a maximum of seven years in prison for several counts of breaking and entering, among other charges, the Department of Public Safety stated. He was scheduled for release in June 2017.

Authorities had initially believed that Dixon was heading to Pitt County after his escape, since his family and friends live in and near the area, officials said.
