HAVELOCK, CRAVEN COUNTY -

People in Havelock said they're happy to see the long-delayed new bridge over Slocum Creek finally open.

The bridge is located just off Highway 70. It’s a project that has been in the works for more than a year.

David Miller lived beside the construction all year and says he's happy to now see the bridge completed.

"I’ve been waiting all year for it to get open. We’ve had to drive all the way around to get to this side and this is going to be much nicer," Miller said.

The Department of Transportation said the project was originally supposed to be completed in May, but after several rain delays and contractor issues have caused seven months in delays.

The now demolished Church Road Bridge was built in 1924.

"We always love to complete them.  That’s our goal, get the bridge open to traffic and make the public happy," DOT Engineer Edward Eatmon said.

General Manager John Price of JJ’s Texas BBQ said they opened their doors in May when the bridge was supposed to be completed.

"It's like a direct shot. I mean from anywhere down on Nine Mile Road coming straight up to right here and it will definitely give us more traffic," Price said.

The construction on the bridge started just a few days after 20-year-old Janie Queen's car crashed into Slocum Creek trapping her inside. It’s still unknown what caused the Havelock teen's car to go off the road into 20 feet of water, but today friends still remember her life by laying flowers on the new bridge.
