KINSTON, LENOIR COUNTY -

Police have identified a man killed when a tractor-trailer allegedly ran a red light in Lenoir County.

According to investigators 21-year-old Zachary Jay Boyd (above), of Pinetown, was going through a green light at the intersection of  Highway 58 South and Highway 70 in Kinston, near Lenoir Community College.

That was when a tractor-trailer, driven by 58-year-old Ramon Santiago, of Florida, ran a red light and hit Boyd's Chevrolet Cavalier, witnesses told police. Authorities got the call at about 9:43 p.m. Monday.

Boyd died from his injuries, investigators said.

The victim's father, Bobby Boyd, said he was awoken by a knock on the door at about 2 a.m. An officer then told he and his wife that their son had passed away.

"At first, I thought I was dreaming," Bobby said. "[My son] was a guy [who] was a lot of fun to be around, a really good athlete and would help you out in a time of need if you needed help."

Bobby Boyd said his son's life was full of joy, but it wasn't always easy. He said he did speak with his son just more than a week ago, and things were looking up.

"[My son] said, 'you know dad, I finally feel like I'm getting on my feet. Things are going good for me.' So I'd always felt like we had come out the other side," said Bobby.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Santiago, was treated and released from Lenoir Memorial Hospital. He has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, police said. The suspect's tractor-trailer was owned by McKenzie Tank Lines.

Boyd attended Northside High School in Pinetown and played baseball there. Services are scheduled for Friday at the Paul Funeral Home in Washington. The visitation will go from 5 to 7 p.m., with the funeral to follow.

Boyd is scheduled to be laid to rest on Saturday during a private burial at the family's cemetery.
