JACKSONVILLE, ONSLOW COUNTY -

An Onslow County man faces more than 20 charges for an alleged crime spree that led to a high-speed chase.

According to warrants, it all started when 20-year-old Ronald Shaffer, of Holly Ridge, attempted to break into a home on Sybil Street Tuesday night. Shaffer allegedly damaged a door and its framing in the process.

Police said when they responded, Shaffer ran away towards Georgetown Road. The suspect then trespassed onto the property of Seegar's Fence Company, where he stole a white GMC truck, according to investigators. As Shaffer was speeding off, he crashed into a fence at the company's entrance, police said.

Shaffer eluded police onto Highway 17, where he eventually lost control and crashed into a tree near the Highway Patrol office, investigators said. He was then taken into custody.

"I don't have much of a reaction to that. You see it every day with young people," said Daniel Rosenbaum, an employee at Seegar's Fence Company. "Man, you ain't going to get away from the cops. Ain't no need to run. Crime don't pay."

Police said Shaffer had more charges brought against him after his arrest. According to investigators, the suspect was taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital, where he screamed profanities and spat on an officer and paramedic.

Shaffer was being held in the Onslow County Jail under a $41,500 bond. He is expected in court for a probable cause hearing on Sept. 26. Should Shaffer be convicted of all charges, he would get up to 12 years in prison.
