ORIENTAL -

A plan for a 12,000 square foot Walmart Express on the outskirts of Oriental is getting resistance from some local business owners.

The area where the Walmart is planned is just outside Oriental's town limits on Broad Street. Town commissioner Larry Summers said the Walmart will include a fairly large parking lot.

Walmart Express is a smaller version of the retailer store. However, small business owners in Oriental still think it might put others out of business.

"This is about saving local businesses," Agency Owner of Horace Mann in Oriental, Nelda Coats said. "This is about shopping local and saving our pharmacy, our hardware store, our grocery store."

Coats even disputes whether or not Walmart will bring jobs into the area.

"They don't create market share, they take market share which puts these other businesses out of business," Coats said.

It's unclear when Walmart would begin building should they decide to build where planned. Summers said there are still building permits to obtain.

The Walmart Express might have a pharmacy in it. While that worries local pharmacy owner, Ed Denton, he doesn't think the community will support the Walmart.

"If they come in, we're not going out of business," Denton said. "We're going to be here until the last prescription is sold."

Request for comment has not yet been returned by Walmart Corporate.
