Separated by less than 250 votes, Dana Outlaw has edged out Sabrina Bengel to become New Bern's mayor-elect.

Outlaw said he campaigned so furiously that he wore out his shoes.

"I made it a point in the last 30 days to get out and meet the people," Outlaw said.

According to the Board of Elections, Outlaw received 52.24 percent (2,763) of the 5,289 total votes Tuesday night, while Bengel received 47.76 percent (2,526) of the votes.

Outlaw will replace outgoing New Bern Mayor Lee Bettis, who had served one term (4 years).

Outlaw was previously New Bern's Ward 6 alderman. Bengel was the alderman for the city's Ward 1.

A number of Bengel's supporters gasped Tuesday night when Bengel told them that she had conceded to Outlaw.

"'Thank you' doesn't seem enough to tell you how much I love you all for getting out and making phone calls and working polls," Bengel told her supporters.
