Pickleball comes to New Bern

A new sport with a weird name is moving into New Bern. It's called Pickleball. There are several courts across eastern Carolina, but the one going up at the Twin Rivers Y.M.C.A. may be the official first one in Craven County.
The game is a mix between tennis and badminton. It isn't played with a pickle either, it is played with a wiffle ball. The name came from the creator's quirky Cocker Spaniel named Pickles.
"There was a dog named Pickles that would chase after the ball,so they would yell 'Pickles bring back the ball.'" said Jacksonville Pickleball Ambassador Rick Laskey.
Rick Laskey has been helping the enthusiastic group in New Bern learn the rules of Pickleball. The person responsible for bringing the game to the Twin Rivers Y.M.C.A. is club member Don Elsass.
"I just thought it would be a good thing to get started here because there are a lot of older folks that might like to play and its a young person game too." said Elsass.
The game is intended for anyone 18 to 90 years old. The court at the Y.M.C.A. is currently marked out with tape, but official Pickleball boundary lines are set to be painted before November.
You do not have to be a member of the Y.M.C.A. to play. For members, Pickleball is free. For non-members there is a small fee.
