Plans for a new Walmart in Craven County

The New Bern Board of Adjustment Monday will consider Walmart's application for a special use permit to start building on Neuse Boulevard near South Glenburnie Road.
Community and Economic Development Manager, Clarence Hulse, said he doesn’t foresee any problems in the permit being approved.
"People are moving here there are a lot of tourists coming here. We have much better purchasing power and so a lot of retail, including Walmart, are looking at this area very strongly,” Hulse said.
He said once the permit is approved construction should start in two or three months.
The new Walmart will be a Walmart Neighborhood Market. It is smaller than a supercenter. Hulse said it will have a drive through pharmacy and a gas station.
"It’s pretty much on your way from work. A quick stop - pop in, pop out - and you don't have to worry about too much traffic issues or parking issues," Hulse said.
He said the new Walmart will be around 40,000 sq. ft. and should bring about 100 jobs.
Hulse said heavy traffic on Neuse Boulevard drew Walmart to choosing this location.
"It’s going to open up a lot more opportunities for new retail in the area. We are very excited," Pulse said.
Hulse expects New Bern to see a big growth in different retailers coming to the area over the next two years.
It's the most recent announcement about new Walmart locations coming to Eastern Carolina. Walmart has been considering building an express store near Oriental in Pamlico County, and a Walmart Supercenter in Grantsboro.
