Police: 2 arrested after $500K in cocaine seized from car battery

Greenville Police worked with the DEA and the SBI to arrest two men accused of hiding half a million dollars in cocaine inside a car battery.

Fernando Garza III, 43, and Renato Rivera Torres, 47, were arrested on Jan. 3, according to the Greenville Police Department. The suspects allegedly had 5 kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated street value of $500,000, inside a car battery.

Garza was arrested in Greenville, near the intersection of Crosswinds Drive and S. Memorial Drive, said police. He has been charged with numerous conspiracy and cocaine trafficking charges, and is being held in the Pitt County Detention Center under a $2 million secured bond.

Torres was simultaneously arrested in Chesapeake, Va., by the DEA and local police, and will be be extradited to Pitt County, according to authorities.

The arrests are the result of a three-month investigation.
