Police say a man who raped and stabbed his ex-girlfriend, then took their 2-year-old daughter from Grifton has turned himself in. Meanwhile, the child has been returned to her mother.
According to Grifton Police Chief Bryan Cauley, 29-year-old Devine Dashawn Exum turned himself in to the Fuquay-Varina Police Department in Wake County at about 7 p.m. Thursday. Exum brought his 2-year-old daughter, London, with him.
Fuquay-Varina is about 18 miles southwest of Raleigh, and about 93 miles from River Walk Apartments in Grifton, where Exum took London from Thursday morning, police said.
Chief Cauley said London was reunited with her mother at about 10 p.m. Thursday night. Grifton Police, Pitt County DSS and Wake County DSS helped coordinate the transport of the little girl.
Investigators said it all started at about 11:10 a.m. Thursday, when Exum allegedly raped and stabbed his ex-girlfriend at the apartment complex on River Walk Way.
Exum then allegedly took their 2-year-old daughter, prompting an AMBER Alert Thursday afternoon.
Exum was booked into the Wake County Detention Center Thursday night on charges of first-degree kidnapping, rape, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, investigators said.
Exum is charged with kidnapping not because he took London, but because he allegedly held the child's mother against her will from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, police explained.
Exum has primary custody of the 2-year-old. The AMBER Alert was issued as a precaution for the child's welfare, said police.
Exum's bond was $650,000. Grifton Police said they are coordinating with officials to bring him back to Pitt County.
Police said Exum's ex-girlfriend is expected to recover.
