A log truck ran over an elderly man in Beaufort County, killing the victim.

WASHINGTON, BEAUFORT COUNTY -

A log truck ran over an elderly man in Beaufort County, killing the victim.

According to the Washington Police Department, 83-year-old Earle Wells walked off the curb on John Small Avenue (Highway 264 East) near the Food Lion at about 2:51 p.m. Monday. That was when the log truck ran over him, investigators said.

Wells, of Washington, later died at Vidant Medical Center, said police.

Neighbors tell NewsChannel 12 they are in shock, and mourning the loss of their favorite neighbor.

With tears in his eyes and a heavy heart, neighbor Marvin Keech remembers his friend.

"It’s pretty rough, a lot of people depend on him. It’s really just unbelievable," he said.

Neighbors said Wells was retired and has lived at The Village Apartments in Washington for more than ten years. Keech said if someone needed a ride to work or just a friend to talk to, Wells was there.

"He was a pretty nice guy. He was like the go to the guy around here if anyone had any problems with anything they go to him, he'd help you out," he explained.

Neighbor’s said he never let age slow him down, even beating cancer a few years ago. They believe Wells was walking along Highway 264 because his car was in the shop.

"Even myself walks on that road and even Earle told me to watch out himself," neighbor Kenneth Hall Jr. said.

He said Wells was a religious man who loved volunteering in the community.

"He’s a great man to talk about, you know it's sad news to a lot of people about such a tragedy happening to him," Hall said.

Investigators told NewsChannel 12 no charges will be filed against the driver of the truck.
