WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -

North Carolina police say a pickup truck licensed to Winston-Salem's fire chief was involved in a hit-and-run accident in March.

Winston-Salem police said Friday they lack enough evidence to pursue criminal charges. Fire Chief Antony Farmer declined an interview Friday with The Associated Press. He said in an emailed statement it's mistaken identity and neither he nor his vehicle was involved.

The accident happened on a late night as 32-year-old Katrina Newton was slowing down to make a turn. She told police that a dark-colored truck with a distinct graphic design hit the rear of her car, then left.

Newton spotted the truck two months ago and reported the license number to police, who traced the truck to Farmer. He announced last month he'll retire later this year.
