NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY -

A railroad problem brings traffic to a stop on a major highway.

The railroad crossing arm malfunctioned at the tracks on Highway 70 near James City early Tuesday morning. Drivers in both directions had to sit and wait for close to 45 minutes.

A media representative at Norfolk Southern said a train parked too close to the crossing and set off the sensor.

Steve Carter, a local driver, said he was stuck in the same situation in June. Carter said he was on his way to a doctor appointment when the crossing arms closed.

“The gates never went back up,” Carter said. “I sat there and I sat there, and I called 911.”

A media representative at Norfolk Southern said the company is not aware of any previous incidents at the James City location, but assured a repair crew on scene fixed any necessary repairs.
